New High-Tech Fake IDs Are a Legitimate Concern for Beverage Professionals

teens at a clubTeenagers can be sneaky, especially when they want to make their way into the hottest 21+ Las Vegas clubs. Businesses and service professionals should always remain focused when carding individuals who appear to be under 35 years of age. Recently, more sophisticated and convincing fake IDs have begun appearing on the market. This new breed of fake identification, complete with watermarks and barcodes, is popping up in more and more states, and it can be almost impossible to tell them apart from the real thing. At a cost of less than $200, enterprising teenagers and young adults are able to purchase very realistic fake driver’s licenses on the internet, often from suppliers in China, and they are finding it easier than ever to enter bars and clubs or purchase liquor.

According to a news story from the News4 I-Team, a test was performed using a scanning device popular with bar bouncers and taverns, and many seized licenses held by police were tested. Approximately 100 of those tested successfully deceived the machine, reading and displaying on the scanner as if authentic. To learn more about these new fake ID’s, check out News4’s article on the subject.

Are you aware of these new high-tech fake IDs, and are you making sure you are doing all you can to check the legitimacy of the identification presented to you? Make sure you are up-to-date on your TAM® training to additional learn tips and tricks for checking ID, and remain vigilant about traditional ways to spot bogus identification. Checking for valid identification is a major component of TAM® training.

Spring Has Sprung – What’s New at the TAM® Office

TAM CardSpring has sprung in Las Vegas, and as we go into a new season, we’d like to take the opportunity to let you know what we’re up to at the TAM® office. We’re keeping busy with our regularly scheduled online and classroom courses, along with a handful of other special events. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new and exciting:

  • TAM® Card classes are available across Nevada. In addition to online and classroom-based TAM® class offerings six days a week at our Las Vegas office, we are also offering classes and online exam proctoring in Mesquite at the Virgin River Hotel and Casino on the third Wednesday of every month. Proctoring for online students is also available in Laughlin every Thursday from 8:30am-12:00pm at the Laughlin Chamber of Commerce building in the Manpower office. Proctoring for online students is also available in the Reno/Sparks area by appointment. For more information on the schedule, visit our website.
  • Spanish classes are offered at our Las Vegas office. TAM® classes are offered in Spanish on the third Thursday of every month at 9:00am. Students are asked to arrive at 8:30am to register for their class. Additionally, with our classroom-based training option, we offer students the opportunity to complete their final exam in English, Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog, or Korean. Students with English as a Second Language can focus on what they have learned without the additional hurdle of English literacy.

Additionally, here are some general reminders and answers to common questions from our students:

  • Walk-ins for TAM® classes are always welcome at our Las Vegas office, but sometimes our classes do fill up, so make sure to arrive 15 minutes before class starts!
  • If you’re looking for our building, we’re located at 3900 Paradise Road, Ste. 205. You’ll find us in the office building at the Park shopping plaza on Paradise Road, between Flamingo and Twain. You can find our building directly behind the Citibank.
  • Our office is easily accessible by public transportation. Bus stop #108 lets passengers off right across the street! If you are driving, convenient parking for students is available on the side and rear of the building. Handicap parking is available in the rear of the building, and elevator access is available. Parking in the front of the building is limited-time parking only.

A Recent String of DUI Crashes on Las Vegas Roads are a Cause for Concern

drunk_drivingOn August 1st, a suspected impaired driver struck and killed a teen driver on a motorcycle (Fox5). This marks the 59th traffic-related fatality in Las Vegas Metro Police’s jurisdiction so for in 2013, and the 12th related to impaired driving. Then, on Saturday night, an accused drunk driver caused a chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles, including a limousine carrying ten passengers (News3). While the total number of DUI arrests is down this year so far compared to 2012, each arrest is one too many. Drunk driving is a serious problem that can harm not only the impaired driver, but also others who share the roads; passengers, pedestrians, and innocent bystanders.

As a service professional, what can you do help prevent customers from driving while impaired and keep things safe? The first defense for sales professionals is a thorough knowledge of local and state laws, and mandatory alcohol awareness training from TAM® of Nevada. For more tips on how to help prevent impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel, check out our blog post “Are You Doing All You Can to Prevent Drunk Driving?

Let’s all work together to make the second half of 2013 safer for the Las Vegas metropolitan community.
